Ahem...
the other day I had a class.For
those of you who aren't following my every movement ( unlike the NSA)
I'm doing some Prep work at Mass Art before I get into a Masters
Program.I do so love to Nerd out on the use of Flash in Photography...
I've read everything Joe McNally and David Hobby have to say on the subject and have met and spoke them both in person at length. Not everyone is as obsessed as I am, I get that. So the extra flash lesson helped some. Others were so resistant.... That's freaks me out....people at the end of a 4 year degree in PHOTOGRAPHY....and they don't know how to or don't want to use Flash...? I'm cool with not wanting to use it..that's a personal decision.
Knowing how to use it and making a conscience decision not to is valid.Just avoiding it because its to hard and there is to much gear to lug around....?
nope.
any way I'm not here to poo poo those nice people.
Hell lots of there ambient light work is WAY better then mine...
Hell lots of there ambient light work is WAY better then mine...
what I am here to say is I've got a plan for what I am doing for the class...
I will need a few lights for this project.
just in case....
the project is a mix of candid moments and Portraits...
so for the portraits I might need a little light...
really a small portable light that looks good.
because
it's not difficult and it's not to much to carry if you want to use
flash to make your photos look the way you want them to.
So I looked around the Wahl Photo World Head Quarters and came up with this.
A small bag I can throw on my back to travel the streets of Boston with.
weather it be on the Train Bus Car Bicycle or the preferred method... Motorcycle.
It consists of.
My Venerable CourierWare Bag.
They used to be made in Cambridge, now in Randolph Vermont.
While the Jury is still out on those I made a little Mod to a Umbrella Adapter.
I have a few of these laying around and mostly use the Metal ones from Manfrotto
for this kit I was looking for something super portable and uber useful...
this one is plastic so it saves on weight but it also has 3 spud holes on each end.
Meaning you can mount it a bunch of different ways to suit your needs.
Perfect.
the one drawback (besides being breakable plastic) is the cam handle.
it just sticks out to much..

I have had this bag and used it almost everyday since....1999?
when they say indestructible they aint lying!
What's a real bummer is that the Camera insert for these bags....well.....it SUCKS.
so I purchased a Timbuck 2 Snoop insert a little while ago...
and it rocks.
Adjustable inserts zipper closure etc.
what goes in that Snoop?
Canon 5D MKIII. ( cause it's awesome )
35mm 1.4, 50MM 1.4,
spare battery, Memory cards. I use the double back up system at this
point. 1 SD card 1 CF. all files go to both cards. it's just safer this
way.....
and an SB28 NIKON flash!
Because I
bought it new in the 90's and used it maybe 20 times before losing it.
then I found it when we moved. it's small and adjustable.... I own SB 800's as well but this one just fits. maybe I'll swap it out for the pair of SB 800's we shall see.
You can use Nikon Flashes on a Canon camera...I just need the center pin, F*%k TTL.
there I said it.
NEXT.
all the stuff that goes with that FLASH!
in the bag o tricks.
2
Pocket Wizards, I'm really digging the PlusX pocket Wizard. I have a
few of them now and these 2 will be dedicated to this kit. It's just easier.
Cables for the Wizards, a mini LED flash light, a little clip, some Velcro wrap, a cold shoe flat mount from Nikon
and
a Giottos ball head with a cold shoe Frios mount.

that thing rocks.
Its got a 1/4 20 and 3/8 socket on the bottom.
Its got a 1/4 20 and 3/8 socket on the bottom.
it's pretty bullet proof as well.
then there is this little diffuser sock thing I got as a stocking stuffer a few years back.....it works what else can I say....oh yeah it weighs nothing and takes up no room.
Plus you can use it as a bag.
There's a micro fiber cloth in a plastic bag so it doesn't pick up and dirt.
The over all bag has a small carabiner clip, it's useful.
a brass turnaround Spud and a spare1/4 20 cold shoe.

This is a bit of a luxury...but it's so small it doesn't make sense not to bring it.
because when you need it you need it.
Honl 1/4 grid and gel pack....CTOs CTBs yellow, blue, red, and green...
all good stuff when needed.
The other Luxury Items.... but this elevates the level of the images so much I would take it along at twice the weight.
it's a small Calumet reflector, white on one side Gold Zebra on the other and a Chimera soft box I can put the SB28 in.
Plus a mini pony clamp to clip the reflector to stuff with.
This has a velcro wrap holding the bracket and the brass stud on the bottom is has a 1/4 20 to 5/8s adapter.
Calumet went out of Business the other day....BUmmer.

a Minolta mini tripod with ball head.I got this a a yard sale for $3...it's worth $20 if not more. light weight and rock SOLID.
my
journal, my date book( it never crashes) sharpies and pens x2, thumb
drive iphone charger ( iphone not pictured) business cards, mini mag
light, Tascam audio recorder, this one was a gift and it does a really
good job, I think it's as good as a Zoom. LaCie Rugged 2 Terabyte Hard Drive, 50 cents for parking
meters. usually there is $2 in change for the meters but I used some
...in a parking meter...
my old trusty bogen mini stand did not survive the winter......

So here is a new addition A Lumopro LP 605 compact stand.
awesome support...and it has ground spikes! How cool is that?
it also came with a carry strap..
it also came with a carry strap..
need to mod it a little so I can use it on uneven surfaces... more on that in another post.
and while I was getting that little number I picked up a LumoPro LP735 3-in-1 43" Compact Umbrella. It's 14" collapsed, and 43" wide when deployed.
Plus its a white, silver or shoot through. I have never used one so we shall see.
so the jury is out on these until I AB-Use them in the field...

so I took it off and cut it down.
Here it is next to the Manfrotto...
And here is what it can all do....
